Weeley Rock 40th anniversary remembered

The 40th anniversary of a one-off music festival in a small north Essex village is marked by a BBC radio documentary.

The Weeley Rock and Pop Festival took place over the August bank holiday weekend of 1971.

Up to 150,000 people descended on farmland in Weeley to see bands including Rod Stewart and the Faces, T Rex, Status Quo and Mott the Hoople.

A documentary looking back at the festival will be aired on BBC Essex on 29 August at 12:00 BST.

Thanks for the info.

One of my greatest memories of Weeley was leaving the festival arena with a mate, going towards backstage for a look around and coming across Ronnie Lane outside a caravan. A fence separated us. Ronnie said hello and we asked him if there was a bar. He not only confirmed it but offered to go and get us a pint (although sensibly he asked us for some cash first).

At this point either Rod or Mac (can't remember which but it was 40 years ago) came out of the caravan and said it was time to hit the stage. Ronnie said sorry gotta go, so we climbed over the fence and found the bar.

I've got to own up and admit that at the time we had seen the Faces so many times, a few beers instead seemed the right alternative.

Proved what a lovely bloke Ronnie Lane was.
