Mac got back from a couple weeks in New Orleans recording an album with Ryan Adams, and he got right back to worlk wrapping up the box set. I believe the deadline has come and gone, so details about tracklisting will soon become solid. When I get them, I'll pass it on via this site.

It is to include all the a-sides and long-lost b-sides (the Faces were very good about releasing original material as b-sides, and many of them haven't been heard in decades), some demos and never-released tracks, plus some cuts that were just recently completed. Of course, one live disc for good measure, which will simply blow Coast to Coast out of the water.

More details as they come. Be sure to pick up Bump in the Night, Mac's recent-rerelease. I've got a copy, and it hasn't left my player since I did.

The Box Set

Postby mikenyc » Sat Feb 22, 2003 6:26 am

mcnarie,

Because of the various sources for the recordings in the box set, could you give us some idea of, 1) who the producer/recording engineer of the set is, and 2) in general, how were the tracks produced ?

Thanks for your valued information !

:D I'm just so psyched over this set! There's three tracks I'm praying show up on there...1.The b-side to "Pool Hall Richard" was a much better
recording of "I Wish It Would Rain" than the one on "Coast To Coast",imo and to my understanding, it has never made it onto CD. 2."As Long As You Tell Him" - this b-side is one of my all time favorite Faces numbers and has only been on boots until now. 3.I know at some shows the Faces performed the soul classic "If Loving You Is Wrong". While I never saw it done at the shows I went to, I'm sure it has more balls than Rod's later solo version. I certainly hope Mac includes this one!
Finally, if there's a live version of "Sweet Lady Mary" I would hope that one turns up here as well. Wishfully thinking...

My excitement is troubling me more than a live lobotomy. Is the "Stealer" and the studio versh of " Maybe I'm Amazed" on there.....Someone????
(By the way, where can i obtain more Faces boots. Sad I know, but Camden Market is not what it used to be!)
Cheers, Jonnie
If anyone can supply me with some decent faces boots apart from the paris studios & one with Tetsu, then I'll be there slave for ever...well my mum can come round and do some dusting.....

I'm withholding judgement, until, I hear how it was mixed.

So many times, we music collectors, have had to settle for some element of a reissue/remaster, and get Royally screwed, sound-wise.

With this information, not disclosed by any of the prinicipals at this point, it gives my expectations pause, until I hear who did the mixing.

Whilst not wanting to reveal too much you can safely assume that The Stealer will be in the box along with a few suprises...including a song with a different working title!

I must admit that i've never heard the band play 'If Loving You Is Wrong' and i have a good few boots from 1969 thru to 1975 on cassette and cd. Maybe you are getting confused with 'I Wanna Be Loved' or 'Love In Vain'?

In the early days they played a few blues numbers that Rod/Woody played with J.Beck...shame they were never captured on a soundboard.

All will be revealed in a few short months!

Keep the Faces Smiling. :D

Box Set Sounds Like A Real Long Player !

Postby tommyross » Tue Feb 25, 2003 4:48 pm

Hi Everyone-

This is my first day visiting this awesome site (hats off to crew) and after looking at the various posts thought it necessary to throw my two cents in-

I share in everyone's general excitement, and await with baited breath (especially after just finishing a tunafish sandwich) the arrival of this long overdue homage to the world's greatest band.

It will be great to hear nicely remastered versions of the "hits" but for me personally it's the live stuff that I crave and can't wait to hear. I was blessed enough to be in attendance at the Anaheim show that Coast to Coast was partially recorded at. I was only 12 years old, just getting turned on to rock and roll, and a friend of my mom's in advertising gave us the seats, 4th row center! My best friend and I (now in our 40's) still talk about this concert as the best ever, EVER!

I agree with several of the posts that said an entire disk of one show would be much more preferable to a bunch of various live tracks mixed in with other odds and ends. Since we've already had a representative of the concerts which were used for the Coast to Coast disk, and by the way, I still maintain that one of the great appeals of that record was the unusual song selection, it's truly a love it or hate it! What I wonder about is what happened to the rest of the live tracks from Long Player? Fillmore East stuff if I remember correctly. I recently got a King Biscuit "Best Of" cd on Ebay just for one track of the Faces on the entire disk. The $4 was well worth it, as there is a 6:47 blistering runaway train version of "I'm Losing You" with a GREAT Kenny solo recording somewhere in San Bernandino in 74. I salivate to thing of the rest of this concert being available!

Looking forward to lot's of live stuff on the box set, and pleased to meet all you fellow Faces fans- cheers!

Tommy

 Not confusing "If Loving You Is Wrong" and "Love In Vain" LOL! I even have an excellent recording of the later. The thing is my first Faces concert was a show in Nassau Colliseum in N.Y. supporting the "Ooh La La" album. Sadly it was the only time I saw Ronnie Lane with the group.
There is on the last page of the program (I still have it!), a list of songs which the band says is a possibility of getting played on any given night and along with the usual fare - "Stay With Me", "Home Grown Silicone", "Maggie Mae" etc. are some oddities I've never heard such as
"At The Off License" and "If Loving You Is Wrong". Oddly enough, "The Stealer" is listed and yes, they did perform it that night! They even had a group of can-can girls come out and do a dance just as the band broke into the encore of "I'm Losing You"! Quite a memorable night as I recall but I'd always wondered if the boys ever did those songs. Now I'm beginning to guess that maybe they never had. Good question for Mac.
It's one to tax his memory I'm sure! LOL!

An Alternative Box Set

Postby bryan @ oakville » Wed Mar 05, 2003 6:17 am

I'm willing to bet anyone that everyone who is interested enough to visit this truely excellant site by Dave (with able assistance from Lynney , Rupe and others) will be purchasing the official box set the day it becomes available. I'm sure that it will be great. I'm also sure that it will be unable to please all the people all of the time. That's reality. We'll bless all involved for their efforts.
There are some of us who (for whatever reason) want more.
We know that there is a lot more out there. The quality varies.
What I propose is : create a database where we can find out what exists and what quality it is. In a week (or so) I'll have the beginnings of such a beast. Using Nico's Woodworks as a foundation I'm adding info from wherever I can get it (Mac's very funny book, my own collection, Pigeon's book, other collector's info on their sites AND YOUR HELP). This is not intended to be a location where anyone can do anything else but share their interest and information. We all know where to get stuff. The goal will be to assist us to avoid the ripoffs presented by commercially oriented jerks who rename material.
Is anyone interested ?

Alternate Box Set

Postby bryan @ oakville » Thu Mar 06, 2003 5:36 am

Hi Ian, I'm thinking that I'll put my database up somewhere. Would naturally want to run it by Dave (he's got an incredible trap of a mind when it come to faces/english pub rock) and get his o.k. - its' his site after all. Then others could debate its' accuracy, add to it and generally share their knowledge. Many will have the material and be able to identify it as crap or great or simply re-titled. There are a number of record shows in and around Toronto. I keep seeing what I believe to be new material but on closer examination (my brain hurts) it turns out (often) to be a new cover on a show I've already got. Thinking of listing recording dates chronologically by tour, songs played, key identifying song introductions/jokes etc. known titles of discs, quality of recording - soundboard/radio/live - audience. My sources are mentioned in the forum posting. I'm sure there are more out there that I simply have not heard of. We've emailed back and forth I seem to remember. I'll bet you would have much to add. Hope so. Others too. It's a community of like-minded faces fans. I'm about 60 % complete now. Hoping to finish up in a week or so. By way of this post I'll ask Dave for his thoughts ... Dave ?

Bryan---

Good idea, no problem with me. Send your latest, we can start a new thread for the sole purpose of fleshing out this database, and I can frequently update a web-readable version of the database. All people would have to do is compare their info to the database, use the new thread to add or correct info, then you update the database and send me the update so I can keep the web version current. Sound like a plan?

Done ! I'll get back to work on it this weekend and fire it off soon. It's currently a word document - can you translate it into whatever format works. Ian Highgate45 seems interested although I suspect (hope) there's more. cheers

Message from Mac re: the Box Set

Postby mcnarie » Fri Mar 07, 2003 10:48 am

Here's a little update from Mac re: the Faces Box:

"At the moment there's 55 tracks I'd definitely like to use, (BBC
Sessions, 'live' recordings, original studio recordings, never
released songs, rehearsals, alternate takes, outtakes, studio
shenannigans & hotel room gems), which leaves room for only 10 or 12
previously released songs from the albums.

It's going to be really great!

Mac"

 This is just incredible! Quite frankly, I think most of us would be happy with the 55 tracks Mac's picked out. As for previously released album tracks, we've got them all! LOL! 10 or 12 numbers would be fine with most of us. I'm sure! Better that, than he knock out one of the other 55 to make room for already issued numbers! This is almost like having several new Faces albums coming out all at once! What could be better than that!!!?

I'm really looing forward to the box set but wanted to ask if anyone knows about any existing live videos?
It would be a great companion to the audio collection.
I have the 75 tour video but I am more interested in older material especially anything with Ronnie Lane in it.

Yes please! :D I would love to see Faces footage with Ronnie Lane! The only Faces concert video/DVD I know of is the one available with Tetsu and special guest, Keith Richards. The DVD is really poor sound and video quality. I have never seen any gigs with Ronnie Lane except maybe a very brief snippet. I'm hoping the box set could lead into more releases with the success and demand....Faces DVDs with Ronnie Lane are a must!

Sadly there is precious little footage available of the Faces playing 'live'.

I guess the one you refer to from 1975 is the Kilburn Concert with Keef and yes, the quality is poor. The Faces bio vid that Lynney referred to is basically a tribute to the band made up from live footage and tv performances. A lot of the 'live footage has been overdubbed with the studio recordings which is a bit naff!

Having said that, it's worth getting just for the footage of the band which captures them in all their glory larking around on stage, there really is some fantastic moments in there. e.g. Laneole checking with Woody to see what the time is and Woody struggling to look at his watch while holding a drink in one hand, a fuck off great joint in the other and a cigarette in his mouth.......priceless! There's much more but I won't spoil it for you. I think it was all put together with the help of the 'Smiler' fan club (one of Rod's).

The best 'live' concert is the 1973 'Ooh La La with the Faces' which was originally on VHS but has long since disappeared. It's around as a VCD bootleg and it is excellent. I believe it was the last concert that Ronnie Lane played with the band, filmed at the Edmonton Sundown (UK not Canada). It's about an hour in total so it obviously has had tracks chopped out in the middle but thankfully not the brilliant rendition of 'I'd Rather Go Blind'

There is also the 'Sounds For Saturday' BBC2 Concert from @1971 (?) This is without doubt the best quality (sound & picture) of them performing but again is only available as a bootleg VCD. It was screened on SKY TV a while back so I was able to tape it as well. Truly wonderful stuff and should be considered for inclusion in the box set as a DVD or even as a stand alone release. C’mon guys make it happen!

Hope this helps

Paul,

There is other Faces video footage.

Marquee, London 1970. My copy is about 10th generation and the quality reflects this.

Disco 2, BBC? 1970. 3 track out-take...Sweet Lady Mary, Tell Everyone and erm? Nobody Knows i think. My copy is 3rd generation, good copy.

Paris, France. French TV concert 1971 (ish). Again poor quality copy.

I believe a 75 gig was aired live in the States but i've never tracked it down. :(

Other stuff i know is 'out there' on video is The Roundhouse, London 1970 and a gig on Dutch TV 1972.....something like 'Pop Gala'? :?

Then there is the Top Of The Pops stuff some of which was reshown in the UK on the digital channel UK Gold (broadcast dates included)......Flying February 1970.
Had Me A Real Good Time November 1970.
Richmond (with Rod on upright bass and Woody playing the toilet seat guitar!) and Bad 'n' Ruin 29th April 1971.
Maybe I'm Amazed June 1971.
Stay With Me January 1972.
Angel (with the Faces minus Plonk who was replaced with a cardboard cut out :D ) 16th November 1972.
Cindy Incidentally 8th February 1973.
Poolhall Richard 20th December 1973.
Maggie May (featuring the Faces and John Peel mimed the mandolin, and even though it was Micky Waller who played the drums on the track Kenney played them on TOTP....he was well pissed off about that....another performance of Maggie May showed the boys playing each others instruments) 16th September 1971.
You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything..live footage from Lewisham Odeon 1974 (which was filmed by Mike Mansfield but never released) December 1974.

The stuff is out there but it is just a question of being able to find it!

Happy hunting!

Ian.

Fair play for that mate!

There's a few there that I was unaware of but I was trying to detail the ones that are fairly easy to get hold of. I have quite a bit of the TV odds and sods but they don't count as 'live' material really as most of the stuff was mimed to which is OK but not the real thing. It would be nice if someone could put all the TOTP and misc bits on one DVD though! Like you say it's out there but getting hold of it is another matter altogether.

No LP tracks in the box?

Postby williamnyc » Mon Mar 17, 2003 12:54 pm

Am I to understand from this thread that only a handful of LP tracks will be in the set? Basically, it's not a Faces complete?

Postby Sean » Tue Mar 18, 2003 2:35 am

No, it is not, as I understand it, going to be complete. The only LP tracks are going to be those that were singles (A or B sides), so in a way it makes sense- collect all the singles in one place. I would be the first one to piss and moan if it were a mere compilation of random LP tracks but this seems to have some logic behind it.
