'FIVE GUYS' BOX SET - Post discussion here

So I could wind up getting it in a week or so even though it's not officially available in the US yet?

I just read this from Mac's site "To meet the surprising demand, thousands more box sets have had to be manufactured." This is great news for those of us who are hoping to see more archival releases in the future.

But, the fine print is that the UK release has been set back until July 5th. Still, only a few days longer...

Yes, of course that is slightly bad news. But what's another week? I've already ordered mine.

I ordered mine from Mac but I was shopping yesterday and I didn't see any Boxsets or even a mention of it, no advertising or anything anywhere. :?

Julie, did you ask any shop attendants? Or were you at an HMV, where the staff are as thick as cheese? I've not heard any recent news of further setbacks, so there may simply be a distribution problem or lack of brains by local/corporate shopkeepers.

Best thing to do is, if you don't see it, make a stink.

Maybe there's a slight delay at some shops due to the high demand. On the bright side, it's very exciting to see that the Box Set exceeded all expectations and more copies had to be manufactured and distributed. GO FACES!!

Mac is waiting for his shipment to come in. Thanks for your patience to all who ordered copies. They'll be signed, sealed, & delivered as soon as possible. It'll be worth the wait...so hang in there!

Bummer, I assumed that he already had them in when I saw the picture of him holding one on his website. Oh well, I hope Texas to California isn't too long of a journey.

Boy, I've lived in both places, and they're about 2 lightyears apart. What part of Cali you from? I was born in Oxnard, between the onion and strawberry fields. Last time I lived there, I was in Simi Valley during the King trial, in Glendale for a while, and in Tujanga during the riots. I worked in Burbank when the riots broke out, and I took a pistol to work, and waited on the roof of Foto-Kem for the assholes to come over the Hollywood Hills. I went home early, had a brick thrown at me (I was riding my motorcycle), and found out they were looting the Ralph's down the street when I got home.

I lived about five miles from Mac at the time. Andy Fraser lived about half a mile up my street. After the 94 quake (which didn't scare me... I had simply come to hate what LA is), Mac left in late March I suppose. I quit my job in April, was gone by May. I don't miss LA one damned bit, and still respect the fact the sky is blue where I live.

Back to the topic at hand, we need to start a new thread for those that actually HAVE in their hands a commercially released copy of 5 Guys. I hope we won't have to wait long for that thread to start.

Culturally I would assume they are indeed light years apart. I currently live in Berkeley, which means I feel the same as you about L.A., or as the Onion's superb Our Dumb Century put it, "an affront to human dignity, not only in the shallow excesses of its bloated overloards, but in the anarchic savagery of its desperate underclass...an overpopulated crucible of dehumanizing human corruption, materialism, and race hatred."
On a lighter note- I haven't been charged for the box set yet, so I probably won't see it for a while. Does anyone have it yet?

That's a pic of an elated Mac after he finally received his copy. More are on the way! I'll keep you posted. You won't be charged until the Box Set ships.

Wanted to join in the CA conversation. I had a friend who lived in Glendale and spent some time in LA in the late 1970s. I've never liked LA. However the East Bay is quite another story - I lived in Walnut Creek for several years in the 1980s and had some dear friends who lived in Berkeley who, sadly, died of old age.

As for the box set, I've not tried to get mine yet. Will do so when I find time in the next few weeks.

Just to let you all know - not only is the box set available in Virgin megastore in Oxford Street in London, but they've given it a great display with a little write up giving reasons why everybody with good taste should buy it. They have also put other Faces releases, most notably "Good Boys" there as part of the display. Nice one Virgin !

I almost spit on the screen.

Dave, I love the idea of fans sending in pics holding their copies of the Box Set. Let's do it! Start sending them in...the wackier the better!

I loved LA as a kid, but I didn't know it as LA. It was the Ventura beach, with swingsets and simple day campgrounds. It was a great place to be taken as a wee pup, on family outings and evening escapes. All gone, bulldozed beyond recognition. The Ventura State Park area is where that once existed, more or less, and it is still a great getaway. A very commercial area now, and I found it tuff to hear live blues bands playing so close to the party beach (it doesn't make sense), but there ya go. The better, older memories haunt me still.

Rod Argent said he was born at the perfect time. I don't think I've changed my mind: I would still prefer to have been born in 1950, and been around to see and participate in a landmark era which can never be repeated. My toys as a kid wouldn't be much worse, but my experiences as a young adult in a whirlwind of change would have shaped me into a better man. Instead, I had to deal with the elitist ycult outh of the Reagan catsup era.

Look at my avatar, all foil and formula. I don't think I played the hand I was dealt as wisely as I should have. My own avatar exceeds me, by at least appearing to get off the ground. I am mocked by my own avatar.

Christgau's 2 Cents

Postby scannest » Tue Jul 13, 2004 10:27 am

A short (but sweet) review of "Five Guys..." from the latest Village Voice:

"I'm not claiming there's much competition, but the greatest box-set name ever is perfect for a band that was never as great as it should have been. Their music was so loose and that was such an up; their music was so loose and their songs fell so apart. Come to think of it, bar bands are generally tighter. But if five straight hours of shambolic garage rock is what you seek, you couldn't do betterthe four CDs maintain a raucous level that crests rather than peaks and never gets boring. Ron Wood you know, Ronnie Lane you should. But above all, here for the hearingwhy old-timers think Rod Stewart had something to sell out. "

Dave, send us a pic with your Box Set! Contest details here:
http://www.the-faces.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=341

'Troublemaker' was officially released on vinyl only. There's a Japanese CD of poor sound quality, and Mac does not receive royalties.

More from Mac on the Troublemaker FAQ here:
