'FIVE GUYS' BOX SET - Post discussion here

Postby Lynney » Tue Mar 16, 2004 8:47 am

A review will be forthcoming on All Music Guide's site. AMG already gave it a five-star rating. YES!

The track list sounds heavenly! Mac is the man!

The review is again a great one:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70311231502220294&sql=A44jieae64xd7

It's a fantastic album, and if you don't believe us, buy the damned thing. It won't leave your player.

...still, I'd have much preferred the review began with "the rowdy spirit of the Faces is alive and well" It would have served Mac far better not to throw a stick at Rod in the same review. For better or worse, it was a throwaway line I'd prefer to have seen thrown away.

D
Due to current economic uncertainties, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

I will agree that the opening of the review of Rise & Shine is unnecessarily harsh -- something that was brought to my attention earlier today, actually -- and we at AMG may revisit the lead to the review, but it ran as is because Thom Jurek is so excited about Rise & Shine, we decided to run his review as he wrote it. After all, it is a very, very good record.

In regards to the box set, the review on AMG will either run on Monday or a week from Monday, depending on how the rest of the week unfolds. I will say this -- there has never been a box set as good as this. No other box satisfies the needs of the hardcore fans while giving the uninitiated a complete picture of the band. I'm still working out the particulars in my review, but I can't imagine anybody being disappointed in this box set.

One final note -- we're preparing a bunch of lists to debut in May, such as Great Double Albums or Great Compilations. I will tell you that we're running Five Guys Walk Into A Bar as the number one in our Great Box Sets list. That won't convince anybody here, since everybody is already ready to buy the box, but anything we can do to get people to discover the Faces we will do. And there really hasn't been a box set as good or necessary as this.

While Rod Stewart has been a wimp for decades, and his latest attempts at being Frank Sinatra are pathetic.

So Rod is a pathetic wimp? FUCK OFF Mr.Thom JERK

Mr.Jerk is currently at work on two books, one on sexual imagination and body politics, and a critical work on musicians using their art to heal themselves during or after periods of great trauma.
:wtf:

I'll not go any further or i'll type something that Dave will regret.

Sorry Dave (and Mac) but this guy is a joke....and this board is Anti-Rod and always has been.........i'm outta here.

Ian.

I, for one, hope you don't vanish entirely Ian.
I may not have bought Rod's last few (or four) albums but I believe
he's still got it in him. It'll happen, mark my words. I find it kind of funny
(odd) that while we (as a collective of musique-hounds) tend to revere
those who have died (no matter what) , we seem to like to take shots at
the living. C'est la vie. Illigetimus non carburendum. (sp)
Stay with us buddy, your work is appreciated.

AMG - Get a Small Faces Pic Up PLEASE....

Postby Droopy » Sun Mar 21, 2004 6:33 am

Hey SFAN.....not to highjack a thread, but if you're with AMG (great resource in general though it always confuses me why the star ratings so often completely disagree with the reviews....) could you please encourage them to get a picture of the SMALL Faces up by their section? I see you guys finally took down the FACES picture that had been up there for years....I guess my emails got through.....But now we need a pic of the lads....

Thanks!

I can't wait to read the review on AMG. Will info be available on which tracks are live, BBC, and studio outtakes, etc before May 25th?

Of course it has been delayed, I mean, the thing was only supposed to be out a year ago. Looking at the track list, this will be a great set IF it ever comes out.

It has been several Mondays, is AMG waiting now because of the (sigh) postponement?

The release date in the UK at least is June 21st . I received the check discs for review purposes along with a ten track Radio sampler in the post today from Warners so It must be on the way as these things do not come out if there is a problem with release schedules so it will be here soon. Been playing it all day and it is AMAZING!! Really. some of the live stuff will blow you away. Particularly the version of I can Feel The Fire which proves just how good this band were (As If I needed to convince anyone here)
All I can say is that no one here will be disappointed and hopefully it will bring new fans to the fold. I just can't tell you how much I have been waiting for this boxed set to turn up

Here's a question- if an album is all ready to go, as this box set is, then what can possibly delay its release? Does the record company hope to win over a few more Faces fans before it releases it?

It depends on what's meant by "all ready to go" - maybe pressing copies has been delayed or copies of the insert - or they just have other CDs that they want to release first. We could guess for ever, but I'm guessing that if the Faces had agreed to tour with its release then it'd have been out ages ago!!!!!

On two of the recent radio interviews Mac has given he strongly hints that a Faces re-union could be on the cards (BBC Radio 6 Liz Kershaw - 24th April and BBC Radio 2 Johnnie Walker - 28th April).

The stumbling block has always been Rod Stewart's reluctance to agree to reunite the band but now even he is talking!

Here's hoping.

Ian.

But who would we like to take Ronnie's place? - Where's Tetsu? :?

Ian, have more fun than you ever thought possible at tomorrow night's gig. Give my love to the Bumps...

Talk is cheap - seeing will be believing - if Rod Stewart were Irish I'd say he's kissed the blarney stone, meantime it's all mullarkey to me!!!! LOL!

Sandie

Don't give up!

Ronnie is guest on Rod's show in August (as you probably know)
so there's a start for you.

I think the last few months of 2004 will bring lot's of surprises,
just my gut feeling.

5 star? damn, that's pretty good...

Postby mcnarie » Sat May 01, 2004 5:39 am

only 5? doesn't the scale now reach 5.5406224?

This is Mac's best album, by a WIDE margin. An incredible effort. It makes all his other 4-star albums look like petty cash.

WHEN IS THIS DAMN THING COMING OUT IN THE U.S.!?!?!?!?

Postby weasel691 » Thu May 06, 2004 11:01 am

Ok I am losing my patience. The net is filled with stories of this box set coming out 5.25.04 here in the US. But none of the online stores are listing it yet and its only 19 days away so its obviously not coming out then. So can someone, anyone, tell me OFFICIALLY when this box set is coming out? I am pretty much believing its not coming out at all.....we've heard about it for three years now!

I'm sure it'll be released eventually - just not in the kind of time frame we expect - just accept that the car's being driven with the brakes on and it'll get there under it's own steam!!!!!!!
