My thoughts exactly. It's just around the corner blah blah blah. I'll believe it when I see it.

Good review...

Postby Droopy » Sun May 09, 2004 1:43 pm

Here's a good sign:

I was at my favorite NYC shop yesterday, a place known for excellent taste and rare vinyl, and the owner, a notoriously opinionated but very knowledgable pop music snob noted my Faces t-shirt and said "You know, there's a Faces box set coming out in a month or so....I got my hands on a promo copy and I've got to tell you, I never was a fan but this selection turned me into one. Excellent stuff!"

tick....tick....tick....tick......

All the more frustrating that we have to wait so long. Promo copies are already out? How long do they need to promote the damn thing before releasing it?

Postby welded » Fri May 14, 2004 7:09 am

Amazon.co.uk are posting that it will be available June 28th...sure they change the dates a lot but it looks like we will have to wait another month and a half at least.

Was this record store "Subterranean" by any chance? Certainly sounds like it. I need to know if it's not as NYC is surprisingly low on good record stores. As it is I always drive out to Vintage Vinyl in New Jersey for my music needs.
And where did you get a Faces T-shirt?! I needs one!

BOX SET

Postby Bruce Moffatt » Fri May 14, 2004 11:42 am

I have a feeling the box-set
won't be released untill the Faces reunion tour
is announced.

The lawyers are probably trying to work out the $ split between the group.

Droopy, is the review available online? If so, can you post the link here? Thanks. :D

Sadly no...

Postby Droopy » Sun May 16, 2004 11:52 am

I don't think the MOJO review is online....at least it doesn't look like the site has much content. With enough caffeine in me I could be inspired to type it up or get my scanner working, but probably wouldn't be allowed to post it, right?

Anyway, it was a first-rate review....

Hi Droopy,

That would be great if you could scan it and email it to me. I'll contact MOJO for permission to archive it on the Faces site. Sounds like a good article. What were some of the highlights?

Yes, lots of news coming about the box set. Yes, it's on it's way. Yes, it is 5-stars worth of Faces. May I try to get a catch-phrase going?

"get ready for the best summer since 1975".

www.the-faces.com/5guys.htm

5 Guys, 4 Discs, 5 Stars. 'Nuff said.

Oh, and to let you know, I agree with the 5 star reviews. I've seen the artwork, it's a great package, and it's intelligently compiled. A great booklet with tons of great writing and incredibly rare photos. Mac did a fab job, top-notch, in putting this together. His intro to the box set, and "a few words about Ronnie Lane", both found in the booklet, are not to be missed. Worth the price of admission alone, this booklet.

As for music, it's even got a few nuggets I've never heard. Few box sets will garner the universal praise I expect for 5 Guys Walk into a Bar, and I believe my expectations to be conservative.

What, me wrong?

But all we know is that it has gotten good reviews, have there been any substantive reviews that we can access, other than merely saying 5 stars, etc?

I've been compiling Box Set reviews on Mac's press page here:
http://www.ianmclagan.com/press.htm#facespress

We'll also be updating the Faces site with reviews and news.

Sounds like MOJO has a nice review. I haven't seen it yet, but if anyone could scan a copy for us we can request permission to archive it on the Faces site.

All Music Guide gave the Box Set five stars and the review will be forthcoming:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... 9ds36wa3mg

It's hard to keep up with all the reviews that are published in the UK/Europe, US, and online. We generally find out about it from all of you. So please use this forum to share news, reviews, interviews, etc. Be sure to post the link and source of the article. If the article is available online, we can post a link on the Faces site. If the article is only available in print, we would need the hard copy and permission to reproduce the text online.

Thanks, it was the AMG review that was frustrating. How can they give stars without a substantive review? Not that I won't be buying this the second it comes out anyway. On a related topic- does anyone know how many songs the Faces did for the BBC total? One of those reviews said that there were 15 BBC cuts and I'd like to know if there are enough remaining to warrant a separate BBC release sometime down the road?

When Mac and I were first discussing this Box Set, back in 99 or so, the idea was to have a Small Faces box, and a Faces box, and a separate Faces BBC Sessions package. Yes, there are plenty of Faces Beeb cuts to warrant a separate package, but whether we'll see it probably has a lot to do with the success of 5 Guys.

Too bad the separate BBC release was canned. I hope the box sells well enough (what ever that means) to warrant more archival releases. If so, I hope they will be along the lines of other archival releases- complete concerts or radio shows rather than a mixed bag of random cuts. There's something about a complete unedited show that is far more satisfying than a collection of various live cuts.

I'm lucky enough to have my grubby hands on a boxless set (just the discs) and i must say.......wow!

Owning a collection of over 500+ boots on CD, DVD, Video and Audio Tape dating back to 1967 (Rod / Ron with the J.Beck Group) thru' to '75 when the Faces split and upto present day collecting the solo boots by Rod / Ron / Ron/ Mac... i would say i was an Officio nardo BUT oh no, there is stuff on the box that just blew me away.

Arise Sir Mac.

Ian.

First, I think I speak for everyone here when I say you're an a-hole. Second, how's the sound on those Jeff Beck group boots?

Not only that, but our Ian is listed in the Box Set credits alongside Dave Mc. and Rupe...congrats on a job well done mates! :D

Can't wait to hear this thang! Gary Crowley played 'I Came Looking For You' during Mac's recent Beeb interview...I almost fell over with excitement.

The box set sounds like it's going to be totally awesome- can't wait till it comes out! Not that it really matters, but I wonder how much it'll be...?
