Ron's Tunings? Flying?

Ron's Tunings? Flying?

"Flying" by the Faces - what tuning ?

Open tuning or standard tuning for the slide / fretted part ?

On the unison instrumental breaks at the end of the verses, I can't seem to find sensible fingering for the fretted licks and suspect they'll fall right under my fingers if I get the tuning right. Bit of a mystery to me, I can't find the path he negotiates thru this part.

Anybody play this ? How do you approach it ? What tuning and what location on the neck ?

Anyone see the Faces live or on video and see how Ron played it and whether in open or standard tuning ?

Thanks, mates !

Be interested to hear any other open-tuning talk for other Ron parts and songs, particularly Faces-era.

Hey there,

Standard tuning, played where you'd expect it to be played as it's in D. If that makes sense

Ron's Tunings? Flying?

Thanks for the tip, it's valuable to at least hear one opinion to "try it in standard tuning." I'll revisit standard tuning and see if I can find a sensible fingering that falls naturally.

The part I'm wanting to find is the instrument break after 1st verse, guitar and bass (and maybe snare) play a fairly legato unison phrase of about 6 notes, and it sounds like bottleneck during this phrase. Then guitar sounds like it switches to fingered notes and breaks away from bass for a rapid 6 notes (2 sets of 8th-note triplets?) then maybe an 8th note, another set of triplets, then theres a sustaining note that falls in a slide gliss down one of the treble strings to enter the 2nd verse. Might actually be 2 guitar parts tied up in the mix. Similar break after the 2nd verse, with slightly different phrasing on guitar, bass probably stays mostly the same (I'm recollecting from memory, don't have it on the stereo just now).

Any video out there of Ron playing this part?

Off topic: I recently caught a band called "Led Zepplica" twice, in November and again in January here in Honolulu. That was great fun watching a good guitarist play Pagey's parts. I highly recommend them if they come to your town.

Allright, I'll go back and look some more, thanks.

No worries,

I know the part you mean. It was a mystery to me to for years but after seeing it played on the Far East Man DVD it's really far from a mystery.

Cheers,

Rich
