Art from Harlem
Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America, a
major exhibition of the works of five Black American artists of the 1920s and
'30s, opens today at the LBJ Library. The exhibit, presented in association
with Laguna Gloria Art Museum, features works by Aaron Douglas, William H.
Johnson, Palmer Hayden, Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller and James Van Der Zee. The
display runs through Feb. 26. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
admission is free. Rock around the clock
Ever had a craving to stay up for 34 hours and
do nothing but listen to live music? Well, here's your big chance. Starting at
5 p.m. today and concluding at 3 a.m. Monday, Steamboat nightclub on Sixth
Street will have a Rock Against Drugs marathon that won't be over until more
than 30 bands have played. If all goes as planned, the event will be
recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records under the category of
"longest continuous rock concert by more than one artist.'' For a list of
participating bands, check the Nightlife listings on pages D8 and D9 of
today's Time Out section. On the town
Former Faces member Ronnie
Lane, now living in Austin and playing with a lineup featuring some
of our town's premier musicians, is at the Continental Club tonight. Alamo
Choir and Luxury For Less also are on the bill. Hey Moe, where's Joe? Moe
Bandy, now performing on his own after several hit records with Joe Stampley,
is at the Lumberyard, with Kelly Willis & Radio Ranch opening. Poi Dog
Pondering, an "impossible to classify" band according to Billboard
magazine, defies pigeonholing once again tonight at Texas Tavern, with
Shoulders opening. A couple of acts are in town from Dallas: Rev. Horton Heat
is at Hole in the Wall, and Donny Ray Ford & the Honky Tonkers are at the
Black Cat Lounge with Teddy & the Talltops. Mark Luke Daniels plays a
release party for his new tape Bare Bones and Railroad Tones at Colorado
Street Cafe with Ben Notgrass. Best of the rest
The Texas Longhorns play host to the Longhorn
National Swimming and Diving Invitational at the Texas Swimming Center
beginning tonight at 6. Or you can wade through the tidal wave of household
items at the the City Coliseum, where various patrons have pooled their
resources for the Citywide Garage Sale. A $1.50 admission fee (it's free for
kids under 12) allows you to browse for bargains from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today
and Sunday. If you're more into garage music than garage sales, take note that
tickets for the Feb. 3 Erwin Center concert featuring heavy metal heroes
Metallica and Queensryche go on sale this morning at all UT TicketMaster
locations. Call 477-6060 for more information.- Peter Blackstock
