Lane's Slim Chance

This 1975 album epitomises Lane's uniquely British hobo-billy
blend of folk, rock and country and Cajun drinking songs. Mandolins, accordions,
violins and barrelhouse piano happily collide, sounding like they were all
thrown together on a couple of glorious, tipsy afternoons. But, what an
extraordinary voice Lane had. Like a melodious wino doing a whimsical Dylan,
when he sings "I got silver in the stars/and gold in that morning
sun", from his gorgeous reading of Country Boy, he's a wise simpleton,
moving and entirely credible.
