Asbury's children all entertaining
by Maxine Mesinger
Houston Chronicle; Houston, Tex.; Nov 8, 1985

FRIDAY FLASHES: Houston dancing teacher Maxine Asbury's offspring continue to make her proud in the show-biz arena. Daughter Sandy will be on PBS's ``Great Performances'' Nov. 23. The segment is Sylvia (Mrs. Danny Kaye) Fine's Musical Comedy III. Fine's special is a collection of great scenes from musical comedies, and among them is a bit on ``Camelot,'' starring Rock Hudson, who did the musical on the road a few years ago. Sandy's also just finished performing in a Ford industrial film in the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Sandy's hubby, comic-ventriloquist Jay Johnson, will be a guest on the ``Tonight Show'' Tuesday. Jay and his dummy were regulars on the now defunct nighttime soap, ``Soap.'' Asbury's son, Cleve, is the short-order cook you currently see on the MONY commercials, and Maxine's other daughter, Claudia, is still working on ``Sophisticated Ladies'' and also staged ``Rockin' in Rhythm'' for NY's Dance Machine. What I always say is, keep those kids working, and Maxine Asbury surely has the formula for that. . .Speaking of Houston entertainers, rock singer and songwriter Ronnie Lane is back from Irvine, Calif., where he performed his song, ``Stay With Me Babe,'' at the Bo Diddley/Chuck Berry jam session celebrating 30 years of rock 'n' roll. It was Ronnie's first stage appearance since contracting multiple sclerosis, and he loved doing it. . . SLOW DOWN FOR THE LOWDOWN: The Dr. Irvin Reiner clan is having its share of wedding happiness. As I reported last week, Dr. Michael Reiner announced his engagement, and then over last weekend, his brother, Sgt. Daniel Reiner, phoned his parents to say he and Dominga Aquinal had just tied the knot. Daniel has been stationed in the Philippines, but is being transferred to Grisson Air Force Base in Indiana... Mediacom Industries' A.J. Cervantes will be in town this weekend working on his new film, ``House of the Rising Sun.'' He inked Houston's Danny Frank to assist in scoring the movie's music. The film will be shot in New Orleans and LA. Frank is the grandson of the late clothing designer-manufacturer Joe Frank, and Danny's talented parents are dancer Hilda Frank and hubby Bobby Frank, who exited the clothing manufacturing biz to concentrate on his first love, singing and acting. . .Oops! My memory failed me this week when I said Becky Damone went to Las Vegas to be a dancer at the Riviera Hotel. She reminded me she was never a dancer, and that she had never been to Vegas in her life before she met her ex-hubby, Vic Damone, and then she only went to Vegas when he worked there. . . BAYOU BUZZ: Alan Banbery, director of Patek Philippe Geneve, the famous makers of watches and clocks, will get ``Texanized'' Saturday when jeweler Cherryll Walzel takes him to Gilley's for his first ride on a mechanical bull. Gilley will supervise the ride himself. This is Banbery's first visit to Texas. He's here with a $5 million collection of Patek Philippe timepieces for an exhibit at Walzel's Monday through Saturday. Banbery and Gilley will meet to discuss a Baroque Country and Western Musical Evening in 1986 which would combine Patek's prestigious European Musical Competition gold medal winner with the C&W talents of Gilley. . .Restaurateur Tony Vallone hosted the Golden Circle of the Houston Grand Opera at a dinner Wednesday night in his Tony's wine cellar. The Golden Circle comprises HGO's major donors, and since Tony and wife Donna are opera buffs, they thought those big spenders should be honored. . . TRIPPING THE NIGHT FANTASTIC: The Remington rolled out the red carpet Wednesday night to host a lavish party for its regular patrons and to celebrate the hotel's third birthday. Remington manager Paul Zuest and wife Jackie stood at the door all evening greeting the more than 400 guests, so it's no surprise that Zuest was battling laryngitis Thursday morn. Tom McCartin, prez of Criswell Marketing, came in for the party - Criswell recently bought the Remington from Caroline Schoellkopf's Rosewood Corp. Rosewood still manages the hotel, and its exec veep, Carlos Lopes came in from Dallas for the doings. Caroline couldn't come due to an earlier commitment in Dallas. Ciro's owner Marjorie Downey was in from NYC and was on hand. Some others in the crowd included Walt and Lo Cunningham, David Webb's Bob Bibb, Cafe Annie's Mimi and Robert Delgrande and John and Martha Culbertson, who were just back from a look-see at their winery near San Diego, where they produce champagne.
